if a companion that was summoned or held is hit or makes a kill, does the summoner get a chance to level?

Yes, the person who summons, holds or charms the monster gets the credit for any kills the monster makes. This is even true in the case where a mage in the back summons a monster who fights with one of the fighters in the front. If the companion make a kill, the mage who summoned him will get the credit.
