I've been reading through some of the posts, and decided to comment on some of the things I've seen people mention.

"Fireball is useless" - It is absolutely NOT! It's one of my favorite spells. Especially later on once you get a collection of priest gems and rings to heal your devistated parties. Why do I like it so much? It makes short work of creatures that can turn your players to stone or cause level drain. And because your characters have a chance of leveling up when your lvl18 mage blasts them. Remember, party members have a chance to lvl up when they take damage.

Someone commented that Rangers were useless because humans age too quickly. My favorite class. I have seven of them in my party. Not the best fighter, but good enough. Much better than Sages. Can actually go toe to toe with harder monsters and not die. Plus, their hit points go up at a fairly high rate, like other fighters. As to the aging, only take them to the inn once they've gotten two pluses. And don't be cheap. Pay the 250g so you can level them in one (occasionally two) tries. If you have a ranger that is 20yrs old, even if you leveled him once you got one plus, you can get a level 120 ranger before he reaches 30. Wait for two pluses, you could double that. I can't imagine ever getting a character to that point. So, nothing wrong with a human Ranger

Peasants are useles - mmm, their uses may be limited, but as some have pointed out, they help you get that class that you were maybe one or two stat points away from getting. In fact, three of my rangers originally started off as peasants.

Of course, I've read the complaints about having to use temperal crystals for saving. I remember a game I played ages ago called Wizardry. Absolutely no saving in that game. A character died? It was dead. I loved that game. I actually feared for my characters, and was devistated when one died. But I still loved the game.

I love the complaints about the lack of a compass or indicator on the map of party position (of course there is a spell that gives you those things, but you have to use precious spell points for it). We have gotten very spoiled in this day and age. Another of my favorite games was Might and Magic I: Inner Sanctum. That game had NO automapping system. you had to get out the grid paper, and hand make your own, or just commit the areas to memory. And there were tons of areas to explore. Not 10 levels.


I love this game, with all it's personality traits (whether I find them usefull or not). Could things be improved? sure. But I would be sad to see any of the things listed above changed.

The only thing I would like to see changed, is the ability to choose the gender of my characters, and not make that a random component of character creation. I don't mind having to roll and roll and roll to get the class I like. It has it's not exactly fun, but I do admit I get excited that I finally get the class I tried so hard to roll. Gives me a sense of satisfaction. But I like to pattern my characters after characters I've played in other games. Making gender random is frustrating to that end. I ended up naming my males with female names. You may notice some of them in the Hall of Fame =)

Thanks for the kind words. The comment about the fireball is well spoken. I have used it myself, and it is quite survivable. However, the healing required afterward is so much a pain in the butt that I rarely use it. In the new version we have changed it so that it does not damage the party, but also only will hit one group of monsters. This will work well for you since you are using it mainly to take out a really nasty group.

Also in the new version, we have reduced the aging a bit. Previously you aged 1 month per rest, and we have changed that to 1 week. I am considering increasing it to 2 weeks/rest before I release, but I want to see how it goes first.

I am new to this game on my android. Ive never played it (or even heard of it) on another platform. I am loving it so far. I also completely agree with being able to choose the gender. That would be great. I think I would like it better if it were completely turn based with no time element at all, but i perfectly understand if that is not in keeping with the game's origins that you would not want that.

Note that although it is not turn based, you CAN slow the game down so that you have more time to make your moves. When I meet up with some particular bad monsters, I crank the speed down to the slowest possible so that I have time to respond. When I am faced with easy monsters I crank the speed up so that I am not bored.

I had this same experience -- with Oubliette! Many many moons ago (1985?!) Oubliette was my first major gaming obsession. I had a pirated copy for C-64, with no help files, users manual or instructions of any kind, so it was pure (heavenly!) discovery -- just what a RPG should be, IMHO. I learned spells by running into monsters that cast them. Their casts flickered on the screen for a small fraction of a second, so I had to be watching very carefully at exactly the right spot, and even then, I'd have to see some of them a dozen times to make out the entire work and correct spelling. And grid paper is exactly right. Each level was 25 x 25 if I remember correctly, with no coordinates, no direction, no level indicator and no landmarks. I had to map out each level by following the wall panels beside and in front of me. It got particularly tricky when I'd hit a teleport that would move me to a whole other location -- sometimes to a different level completely! To this day it remains the most challenging and satisfying gaming experience I've had.
(With the amount of time and brain power I spent playing, I'm sure I could have become fluent in several foreign languages and possibly learned to play a musical instrument or two! ;) )

You are an old school gamer. Modern gamers are such wusses. Everything has to be spelled out and handed to them on a silver platter, and, God forbid, if something actually needs to be discovered they run to the fan websites and find all the spoilers. But, alas, it is the way of the world these days and you have to make some accommodations.

I started to play and realized there's like all these premade toons ... Said to myself great there goes the fun and sense of accomplishment of actually leveling from scratch. Plato version u had 1 toon that's it. No protection . Course it was multiplayer but people used to run solo a lot and if u died u had to have another player Rez u. No porting to castle ... I think they had to find ur dead body where it fell. So can u imagine having to rescue someone from lev 10 .
Fireball , I don't know what ur thinking with the change… granted it injures the party . If ur using fireball you are a struggling young mage that can't manage casting fieminamor yet or u ran out of mana so to speak ur weak ur tweeking ur skills . A lot of times I didn't want to go back to the castle till I was super low on resources . What would wind up happening is I ran out of heal spells no gems no potions suddenly a few undead random encounter uh oh drained 10 levels fighters weak can't heal can't fireball run the risk of insta death but I'm getting drained nonetheless. All I can say is I stayed in the dungeon too long serves me right. These changes with fireball …thanks another dimension of realism and fun sucked from the game.
A patch should have hit soon after to fix the spellbug in ver 1.2 What's the point of the hall of fame if I can run lev 10 with 3 toons endlessly forever literally. I don't run out of spells since I get gems from drops soon enough. Since there was no fix there's all these level 70 plus toons out there that didn't earn them .
If ur going to change fieminat what r u going to do to with narfiet? They will almost b the same spell.
The people playing oubliette play because it had that element of raw realism .

You make a lot of good points and I actually agree with most of them. When I first had the idea of bringing this to mobile devices, I did not plan to give you maps, portal gems, a starting party, but I was convinced by others that it would not fly without those things. And in fact it barely flies with them. Oubliette on PLATO was a VERY hard game, and in my mind that made it also very fun to play (that and the fact that it was multiplayer).

The reason that I didn't fix the monster spell casting bug earlier is that I was simply unaware of it. I only found it when testing the new version on the lower levels.

I appreciate the fact oubliette is even available and wow version2 soon. Hasn't xmass come and gone ? Will always love this game and the people behind it. Granted its probably not bringing in endless $. Today , kids just are spoiled. If it doesn't glitter pop and shine they get bored. In fact they get bored if it doesn't get a patch every 3 days.
