GAHH!!! Death of my Prized ranger!!!

(this is a random story, not a problem or complaint)

After many pain staking hours leveling up my character as a peasant, I was so happy to reach lvl 20 and proceed to the guildhouse for his final initiation into the Rangers group (after a temporal save first). He was magnificent! Lvl 20! powerful! Everything I had wanted in a Character! So of course I ran straight down to lvl 5 and triggered another temporal save to solidify him!

After HOURS and HOURS of dungeon crawling with his partner, a Dwarven Samurai, and their band of helpful helpers, we battled endless foes and countless angry beasts! Carefully avoiding teleporting trapped chests and one hit killing so many devious stoning creatures.

Then, on one fateful afternoon, we were proceeding down for our ritualistic cleansing of dungeon floor 5 (now our team is touching its 30s), when what should appear but a large group of cockatrice that could cast stone! Quickly and adeptly my Sage dispatched as many as he could, followed by 4 more felled by my dynamic duo of Samurai and Ranger... In the fray, one of the mobs fired of a stone that caught my Ranger unaware... the team quickly dispatched the foe and turned to assist their fallen. As adeptly as before, my cleric began casting KOMINALITO (Full Raise)... Shock and disbelief struck me! My amazing Ranger had fallen forever! Tears fell, and shock rippled through our team. Our most versitle of team mates had fallen. His very first death proved to be his final...

My amazing luck had run out... almost 10 levels of pure wonderment without a single death, and the Grimm Reaper snuffed out his oh so short life... RIP my friend!



As most true gamers would have noticed, my great and noble Ranger was not entirely dead. I quickly reloaded the temporal save, and was heartbroken that I had just lost 10 whole levels from my dear dynamic duo. I am not saddened by this ordeal, actually i am relieved that John Gaby had implimented the Temporal room, and that my late, great warrior would not be lost to memory. I will however share my lesson with you all... never overestimate the abilities of your warriors. A single death was all it took to remove 15 or so hours of painstaking work. Remember to save, or else suffer thae same fate as I have.

Nice story. FYI, when a character dies and you haven't saved recently, you can return to the castle before you attempt the raise, and create a portal. Then try the raise, and if it fails, restore the game and try again. In the original game, when you were dead, you were dead, but we decided that that was simply too brutal for this game in this day and age.

John, that reminds me of something I had running around in my mind. Does your dungeon level play a part in the success rate of resurrections? Having a Con of 31 should have made this a sure shot, but I tested it after on my saved game and found a pretty low success rate bringing this individual back. Just really poor luck?

Hi Hellion I really enjoyed your story.

One of my favorite things about this game is the inner monologue that goes on in my mind amongst the characters in my group as I decide who is at the front of the party, which equipment each Character will use and also who will benefit from the rare stat raising items.

I'm really partial to Halflings myself, Kobolds advance faster but it’s very hard for them to reach the point where they can attempt to enter the Ranger's Guild. I have three Halfling Rangers (if I remember correctly 2 were naturals and 1 leveled as a peasant to raise his wisdom prior to entering the guild), one Dwarven Sage (an amazing roll of the dice: maxed wisdom, constitution, high intelligence and strength), five Halfling Samurais and one holdover from the original party the female Ogre Hirebrand wielding Excalibur.

I've found that after a certain point Rangers need to retire from active combat and move into a spell casting support role. I would suggest you level up a second Samurai to join your Dwarf on the front lines and have your Rangers concentrate their priest and mage spells on other spell casters, undead with drain attacks and fire breathing dragons.

Keep writing I'd love to hear the further exploits of your team as they journey further down to the deepest levels of the Oubliette!

It is not based on your location. I looked at the formula, and with a Con of 31 your chance of failure should be 1 out of 10. If you think that you were seeing something else, restore your game to where he is dead and submit a comment from within the game (which will send me your game file), and I will look into it.

I don't know if this is the same issue or not, but my little mage I was working on just had the same fate. Lvl 24+2, was just about to head up for training when I accidently clicked open instead of spell on a poisoned chest... Long story short, Mage dead, con 19, Hits 0/65, RIP. Comment submitted for inspection.

I agree, I find myself picking favorites so much that my poor little Elf Sage is vastly underleveled.

I have yet to roll a Halfling, but after your recomendation, I will make one next!

Sounds like good advice, any recomendation when I should back my Ranger off the front lines?

Thanks, I will take a look. By the way, I have decided to change the full raise so that if it fails, it give you one more chance as a partial raise. If that succeeds, then you will be alive but with only one hit and a loss to your con (but it is better than being dead). I would like the raise to be a viable option to running back to the Castle every time a character dies.

Hi Hellion,

I usually take my Rangers off the frontlines when the difference between their Armor Class and the AC of my Samurais becomes too great. The Samurais can only use cloaks while the Rangers can use leather (until you find the highest level magic armors) but the Samurais gain a natural bonus to their AC as they level up. Also once the Rangers have access to the higher level Mage and Priest spells they usually level quicker by blasting the enemy from the back with lightning, fireballs, holy words and death. Hope you're still enjoying the game! I know I am! My Ipod Touch goes everywhere with me and I fire up Oubliette whenever I have a spare moment.

Hi Lao Tzu,

Of course I'm still loving this amazing game. I am actually participating in Beta-testing the Android version. Also, your advice on the Halfling race was spot on! I created a Natural Halfling Samurai and he QUICKLY surpassed my Dwarf in one night of power leveling. I was shocked! Not only is he on par with the Dwarf's STR and WIS, his AGI is through the ROOF. Now I am finding myself starting with my Dwarf Sam first when I go out on leveling excursions (since he takes longer to level usually). Thanks again for the great tip. I will continue to share stories and my observations in the discussion section. Hope to hear more juicy nuggets of knowledge, and maybe a story or two from the depths when you get a chance.

Hi Shade,
First off welcome!

No it doesn't sound stupid at all. There are 2 ways to make a character a Samurai or Ranger. First, when you go to the create new player section, you choose your race and "Roll" your character until you get the stats that allow you to choose that Class (basically your job). And second, you can Roll your character and choose Peasant. Peasants have no special abilities, but they level FAST and gain random stats as they level. So you could get your stat points close to a Ranger's or Samurai's requirements, and level up as a Peasant till you get them. Then, once a level, you can attempt to "Join a Guild". At which time you select that guild you are eligible for, and try to join... but there is a catch. Leveling up makes joining a guild harder and harder the higher level you reach. This can lead to failing or death... (this is one of the reasons John put in Temporal Gems).

With all this in mind, now you can work on getting some serious characters built. If you need more information Snafaru has a wonderful website set up with fact sheets and item cheat sheets. I highly recommend just reading his guide and playing a while before reading all the cheat sheets. Knowing the dungeon layout and items that will be out of reach for months really does kill a lot of the fun.

Also note that if you are running version 1.x then you must also be Human to be a Ranger. This restriction has been removed in 2.0.
